Office & Storage Mezzanine Floor Cardiff for Swanson Mackay

Swanson McKay came to Premier Mezzanines needing additional storage in a new warehouse which they had just secured the lease on. The new warehouse, which was based in Cardiff, South Wales, was needed due to the rapid expansion of their business. The client needed extra storage for stock and decided the best solution was to construct a mezzanine floor to act as an area that warehouse operatives could pick and pack orders from stock which was stored there.

The mezzanine floor, which was designed for the project, measured a total of 240m2 and was built to a storage capacity of 5km/m2. Not only could it store pallets of every size, but it could also feasibly store any item that could fit in the area as long as a total capacity wasn’t exceeded. By thinking about the future needs, need changes and potential stock changes Swanson McKay were able to future proof themselves and avoid repeat spending to change storage solutions in the near future.

The mezzanine floor would act as an area for warehouse operative to pick and pack orders. The design allowed office areas to be established underneath the mezzanine floor allowing Swanson MacKay to consolidate all their needs to a tight area without giving up extra areas in the warehouse.

One aspect of this project which created a challenge was the foundations which the warehouse sat on. The flooring was made up of pile reinforced concrete slab which is a suspended type of flooring which is used when a proportion of the ground is deemed inadequate for supported slab.

For most other projects this would have been fine, however, given the additional weight that was being loaded onto the foundations the columns of the mezzanine floor had to line up with the piles to avoid cracking the slab. A thorough survey took place to establish where the piles were located, and the mezzanine floor was planned to be positioned in exactly the correct place.
