A Mezzanine Floor for office space or light storage will usually be designed to take 350kg per square meter.
A retail Mezzanine Floor or one for medium storage will usually be designed to take 480kg per square meter.
In contrast, a Mezzanine Floor for heavy storage or production where machinery may be required may need 720kg per square meter or more.

Generally, larger floors will cost more, but larger floors also benefit from economies of scale.
For instance, the columns and main beams of a mezzanine floor are shared when the floor grows beyond the initial bay. There will be additional management and reporting requirements for major projects that fall under the Construction Design and Management Regulations.

Indirect Location Costs
The installation of a mezzanine floor is faster and cheaper in a clear, empty area than in a crowded warehouse. Weekend work will also increase the floor’s cost.
In addition, our operatives are usually provided with welfare facilities like WCs and canteens on most sites. Where these are unavailable they will need to be provided by you or factored into the project cost.
Direct Location Costs
A mezzanine in the middle of a building would require handrails on both sides. On the other hand, if it spans the entire length of a building it would only require handrails on one side.
6. Will Fire Protection be Required?
It is reasonable to expect that fire protection will cost 35-40% of the cost of the mezzanine floor.
If Fire Protection is required this can have a significant impact on the final cost of your Mezzanine. So the question is does your mezzanine floor require fire protection, as long as any of these apply, then yes:
- if the mezzanine is used as an office or has permanent occupants.
- if over 50% of a building’s space is encompassed by the mezzanine.
- if the mezzanine extends more than 20 meters in either direction.
- When the building has a sprinkler system that can extend below the mezzanine level, fire protection will not be required for the mezzanine
This means that building control will ask for the floor structure to be fire protected to one hour.
To ensure the fire resistance requirement of one hour, a combination of materials may be used. These might include cladding on the columns, fire protection within the ceiling on the underside of the mezzanine floor, and paneling on the exterior.
